Can a full-stack engineer get the Global Talent Visa?
Yes. There is no role gate on the Digital Technology route: a full-stack engineer is assessed against exactly the same framework as any narrow specialist. You must satisfy the mandatory criterion, which asks you to show that you are a recognised or emerging leader in digital technology, plus at least two of the four optional criteria. Since 4 August 2025 the process begins with a single GOV.UK Stage 1 endorsement form; Tech Nation remains the endorsing body that assesses your case. Once endorsed, the visa is reported to be approved around 99% of the time, while the digital-technology endorsement itself is reported to pass around 1 in 4 applicants. The endorsement stage is where full-stack cases are won or lost.
The question that decides those cases is never "does full-stack count?". It is whether the assessor, reading your pack in under an hour, can see one distinctive individual technical story rather than a competent generalist who could be any of a thousand applicants. That is the problem this page is about.
The generalist penalty: why breadth alone loses
Assessors read hundreds of applications from engineers who list React, Node, Python, Postgres, Docker and a cloud platform. A stack list is a job description; every mid-level engineer on the market has one. The endorsement framework does not reward the number of technologies you can operate. It rewards evidence that you, individually, have done something in digital technology that peers outside your employer recognise.
This is the generalist penalty: the very breadth that makes you valuable to an employer makes your application blur into the crowd unless you impose a narrative on it. A specialist arrives with a built-in story ("I am one of the people behind X"). A full-stack engineer has to construct that story deliberately, and the applications that fail are usually the ones that never do, presenting three jobs, six products and fourteen technologies with no centre of gravity.
Pick one flagship system and evidence it end-to-end
Choose the single strongest system you have built: the product, platform or service where your fingerprints are on every layer. Then evidence it in depth rather than listing it in passing. A strong flagship write-up covers four things. First, the architecture decisions that were yours: why that data model, why that queue, why that rendering strategy, with the trade-offs you weighed. Second, scale and reliability numbers: requests per day, records processed, uptime, latency, cost per transaction. Third, commercial outcome: users acquired, revenue carried, churn reduced, engineering time saved. Fourth, attribution: commit history, design documents, dated internal reports and letters that name you as the person who made the calls.
Your other work does not disappear; it becomes supporting cast. One document can show the range of systems you have shipped, precisely because the flagship has already established depth. This is the same 10-document discipline set out in our evidence guide: a maximum of 10 documents of up to three sides of A4 each, with your CV and three recommendation letters sitting outside that count. Spend perhaps four of the ten on the flagship, and make each of the three letters point at it from a different angle.
What counts as evidence for a full-stack engineer?
The artefacts that score are the ones that are public, measurable and individually yours. In rough order of strength for a full-stack case: shipped products with user or revenue numbers attached to your name; open-source work across the stack (a backend library and a frontend tool is more distinctive than either alone) with download and dependent-project metrics; technical writing with a real readership, such as engineering-blog posts or invited articles that others cite; and side projects with genuine traction, since a project with paying users or meaningful adoption is a complete end-to-end story that belongs to nobody but you.
One structural factor matters as much as any artefact: where you did the work. Assessors weight experience at product-led digital technology companies, and careers spent at agencies, consultancies and outsourcing firms are a recurring refusal pattern, because the product, the users and the innovation all belong to the client. Side projects and open source become disproportionately important here, because they are the product work that is unambiguously yours.

Should a full-stack engineer build on OC1 or OC3?
You need the mandatory criterion plus at least two of the four optional criteria, and for most full-stack engineers the real decision is how to divide effort between Optional Criterion 1 (innovation) and Optional Criterion 3 (significant technical or commercial contributions). OC1 suits engineers who built something genuinely new: a founder whose product reached the market, or the author of an open-source tool the ecosystem adopted. OC3 suits employed engineers at product companies who can attach measured impact to systems they personally owned: revenue carried, users served, performance transformed.
The honest rule of thumb: if your best material is a product or tool with external adoption, lead with OC1; if it is measurable impact inside a product company, lead with OC3 and let commit history and dated reports carry the attribution. Many strong full-stack cases evidence both and add Optional Criterion 2 (contributions beyond your occupation, such as mentoring, community leadership or maintaining open source) as the third leg. What rarely works is stretching thin material across all four optionals; two evidenced deeply beat four evidenced weakly.
Talent or Promise: which fits your seniority?
Exceptional Talent is for engineers already recognised as leaders and carries a 3-year route to settlement; Exceptional Promise is for those showing clear potential and carries a 5-year route. For a full-stack engineer the test is where your name travels. Staff and principal engineers whose systems are known outside their employer, founders whose products shipped at real scale, and maintainers of adopted open source usually have Talent-shaped cases. Engineers 3 to 5 years in, with one strong shipped product and a growing external footprint of talks, writing or open source, usually fit Promise, and choosing Promise honestly is far better than over-reaching for Talent and being refused.
